Dan Schwab, Nick Madden, Lou Maier, and Jeff Frohm who have all had great seasons, enjoyed an exciting weekend with other athletes from the CHE where they took part in a skills competition and All Star game. The festivities occured January 10th, 2010 at the RMU Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Jeff Frohm was name the All Star MVP and stopped all 13 shots he saw in the second period of the game, helping lead the North to a 10-1 victory. Jeff was also named Player of The Week for his performance at the All Star Game. Congratulations gentlemen and good luck the rest of the season.
Fredonia State vs. Robert Morris
A big game for the Fredonia State Blue Devils against Robert Morris, the Devils came out slow with a poor start in the first period with the momentum in Colonials favor.. The opponent notched the first goal on the powerplay with 1:38 left to play in the first to cap off a dominating period.
In the second the pace of the game changed. Fredonia was able to tie the game at 1 a piece on the powerplay with a goal on the power play with a shot from the point from Dave Weider which was ultimately tipped in front of the net by Nick Ferrentino. The second assist on the goal was from Brian Becker. That goal was Ferrentinos seventh of the year and is the team leader in goals. With the play still shifted in FSU’s direction Dan Schwab in the right place at the right time put home a rebound goal after a shot from Glenn Draves to make is 2-1. Assists to Draves and Hurley.
After a great second period the third looked to go the same way until number 19 from Robert Morris scored to make it 2-2 with 13:17 left to play in regulation. But on the very next shift Dan Schwab snipped his second of the game unassisted to take the lead 3-2. The game was at a stand still until 2:22 left in the 3rd when just killing off a 4 minute penalty kill FSU gave up an odd man rush and the game tieing goal. The game would head into overtime.
2 minutes and 17 seconds into Overtime Brendan Prince tipped in the game winner from the point off of Glenn Draves stick for his second assist of the game. A big win for the Fredonia Blue Devils and will hopefully set the tone for next weekend against IUP and CAL.
Weekend Games (Oct. 9th & 10th)
Your Blue Devil’s struggle this weekend with no wins and 2 losses. Those losses came at the hands of University of Pitt-Johnstown and Penn. St. Altoona.
Oct. 9th (FSU at UPJ):
In the first game played Oct. 9th fredonia came out strong taking a 2 goal lead (2-0) in the first period with goals from Pat Hurley assisted from Vince Epping (Power Play Goal) and Lou Maier’s goal with assists going to Dave Richards and Aaron Miller. The game looked as if it was in the hands of FSU.
In the second period FSU still maintain control of the game but Pitt-Johnstown was able to match FSU with 2 goals in the period making the score at the end of the 2nd (4-2). Goals for FSU Brian Becker with 2. On his first goal the assists went to Maier and Miller. On his second Alex Garfield notched his first career college point with a great pass out of the corner to Becker slicing down the middle and beating the goal tender.
The third period is when the game began to unravel. UPJ scored the next 2 goals to tie it at 4. Nick Madden was able to score on the power play (assists from Schwab and Maier) with 9 minutes to go in the game to make it 5-4. With only 1:21 to play UPJ scored to tie the game and bring it to overtime and ultimately were able to score and end the game to win 5-6. A big hand in FSU’s loss was penalty trouble having 12 total penalties and UPJ scoring 5 of 6 goals on the power play.
Oct. 10th (FSU at Altoona):
Very early in the game FSU went short handed, but Aaron Miller was able to gain possesion of the puck and go on a rush the other way and rip a shot passed the goaltender to score short handed. That was the only point in the game in which the Blue Devils held the lead. From that point on the game did not go there way.
At one point in the 3rd period FSU was down 7-2 but finally put there game together and began to play well. They nearly came back netting 3 goals to make it exciting but in the end it wasn’t enough and they lost 7-5 for their second straight loss.
Goals in the game were Aaron Miller, Mike Shields, and Dave Weidert each with 1. Nick Ferrentino had 2 goals and added an assist for 3 points in the game. Lou Maier and Brian Becker had two assists and Nick Madden had 1.
